Introduction

Our lab is located in Bioinformatics 251, inside of the 2nd floor lab corridor. Before you begin working in the lab, there are a few things you should be familiar with. Please reference the sections below for more information on obtaining lab access, completing necessary safety trainings, and downloading up-to-date lab protocols.

Obtaining Key/Card Access to the Lab

To enter the lab corridor, you will need key card access via your 49er ID card. To enter the lab, you will need a lab key. To obtain a lab key and/or card access, email Trish Artis (partis@uncc.edu) and have her submit a key request form on ARCHIBUS. Please cc Alex on all emails to Trish.

Safety Trainings

There are a few safety trainings that you should complete before working in the lab. To access these trainings, visit the CITI website by clicking on the link below. You will need to register an account, selecting UNC Charlotte as the subscribing institution. Once you have an account set up, please complete the following courses:

  1. Data or Specimens Only Research (IRB) Basic Course: This course is appropriate ONLY for Investigators and staff who will conduct research using data or specimens. If you will conduct other types of research that involves direct contact with human subjects, you should complete one of the above courses.
  2. Laboratory Personnel BSS: This course is for laboratory personnel planning to use or handle biohazardous materials.
  3. Biomedical Sciences: Responsible Conduct of Research.

Using the Autoclave

"The Biosafety Office hosts a virtual autoclave training session on the 2nd Monday each month. This training provides a foundation for steam terilization and solid waste decontamination. It does NOT replace required in-person training by responsible PI to operate the equipment on campus." To fill out the form, follow the link below and scroll down to the "Autoclave Use" section. You will need to access the form using your UNCC email.

This video provides an quick overview of autoclave use, but should not replace the above training.
